Meditation practice is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. There is a large misconception around the practice of meditation that it “turns off” your brain. This is impossible and we’ll tell you why later. We want to give you some simple tips that will help you start a meditation practice, and hopefully, continue afterward as well.
We’ll start with the benefits. Even just short, regular meditation sessions have proven to:
- Reduce stress
- Alleviate depression
- Improve sleep
- Boost the immune system
- Increase the ability to focus
- Lower blood pressure
Meditation has a way of making you feel better, calmer, more resilient, and more controlled over emotions. These benefits are what will hopefully make your stay on a regular meditation schedule.
If the tips below don’t convince you, Roses Poses offers incredible meditation classes in Sierra Vista. We’ll be able to show you in person why meditation practice is so amazing for your body.
Don’t Worry About Doing it ‘Right’
People picture meditation as an ability to turn off thoughts completely. It’s one of the biggest reasons why people are turned away from meditation. Even when they attempt to meditate, people will often think they are doing it wrong and give up.
Just as the heart is meant to beat, the mind is meant to think. No matter what technique you use, the purpose of meditation is to be aware of what’s going on around you without reacting to it. You want to be caught in the present moment and let your awareness rest in reality and not the ‘stories’ your mind has created.
Start with 5 Minutes
Another big misconception with meditation is that you have to do it for at least an hour a day. The science behind meditation is that you only have to do it for five minutes in order to gain health benefits. Chances are that most of us have a spare five minutes in our day.
Meditation Practice with Comfort
When you picture meditation, you probably envision someone on top of a lush mountain sitting cross-legged. You don’t need to be anywhere special or be able to bend into a knot just to meditate. Make sure you’re comfortable and have your torso upright so your breathing to unrestrained.
You want to be in a seated position with good posture, not laying down. Sitting in a chair or a cushion on the floor are good ways to get comfortable for meditation.
Meditation Practice Requires Consistency
With any other hobby or habit you have, you need to be consistent in order for it to stick. If meditating every day seems like too much, try making sure that you do it at least once every three days. While many people tend to start their day with meditation, it can be done at any part of the day that works best for you.
